Some seasons end with medals for Cowichan, others begin with fresh faces

Urquhart scores bronze at World Jr. Lacrosse Championships

Addison Urquhart, of Cowichan Bay, captained the Canadian Lacrosse League’s Team Canada to a bronze medal at the International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL) U18 World Junior Lacrosse Championships, held Aug. 21-25 in East Aurora, N.Y.

Urquhart was named captain before the tournament began and led the team in scoring, finishing with nine goals in four games.

Earlier this year, Urquhart was also a key player on the Canadian Lacrosse League’s U20 development team, which went undefeated to retain its IIJL Commonwealth Cup title in Melbourne, Australia. He totalled 38 points in four games.

Urquhart has committed to play for the American International College Yellow Jackets on an NCAA Div. II scholarship. He will also continue his studies at the school in Springfield, Mass.

Bowling coach leads Team Canada to four medals

Cowichan bowler Brent Pinnell coached Team Canada’s tenpin bowling squad to a major medal haul at the 2025 PanAm Bowling Youth Championship, held Aug. 9-17 in Guatemala City.

Pinnell’s teams earned four total medals: silver in junior men’s trios, bronze in junior men’s all events, and gold in both junior women’s and junior men’s team events.

It was the first time in Canadian bowling history that Canada had won double gold in the team events.

Pinnell rolled his most recent perfect game at Duncan Lanes in October 2024.

Islanders add vet in net

The Kerry Park Islanders have picked up veteran goaltender Joshua Dubreuil for the 2025-26 season.

"Dubreuil brings experience and stability and is expected to stand tall between the KP pipes," said the team in their announcement of the incoming player.

Dubreuil backstopped both the Langley Trappers and Surrey Knights of the Pacific Junior Hockey League last season.

Brentwood grad cracks Team Canada for rowing Worlds

Fresh off a win with the senior men's four at the Holland Beker Regatta, Brentwood College (2019) and UBC (2024) graduate Axel Ewashko has earned a spot on the senior men's squad headed for 2025 World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, China, from Sept. 21 to 28. 

Ewashko has been training at Canada’s National team training centre at Quamichan Lake for the last year.

Bulldogs' football seasons begin

The bantam Cowichan Bulldogs played their first tackle football game of the fall season on Aug. 31 at McAdam Park against the Campbell River Sea Dogs. Due to the statutory holiday, the result was not available before the Citizen's press deadline. 

This season's bantam head coach is Trystan Ryder. Kyle Bellis is the Association's peewee head coach for the fall season and the junior bantam head coach is Opie Williams. Justin Young will coach the midget squad this fall.
