Letter: Move to resume logging shocking, irresponsible

I urge you to rethink and to reverse your decision
letters

Dear council members of the North Cowichan municipal council,

It has come to my attention that recently, the council members made the decision to resume logging on the Six Sacred Mountains in the Cowichan Valley.

In my opinion this is a shocking and irresponsible decision, which not only disregards and dishonours the cultural and ancestral rights of our indigenous family here, but this is in contradiction to your public consultation where the vast majority of locals and First Nations wanted to pause or halt logging.

The alleged financial benefit is indeed small against what can be gained in refraining from drying out our salmon bearing creeks and rivers through clear cut logging.

A native of Denmark and a daughter of four generations of foresters, I grew up in a culture of sustainable and respectful harvesting of trees, enabling the ecosystems to continue their cycle of life, nourishing animal and human life in return.

Now a Canadian citizen, it sickens me to see the abuse that is being permitted here of the resources at hand.

I urge you to rethink and to reverse your decision, as the consequences of continuing logging operations are frankly very scary for the next generations.

Restore habitat; bring back the ecosystems that support the return of salmon; indigenous plants — and a nourishing environment for all of us.

Annette Lampson
