Letter: North Cowichan is marching backwards

Council ignoring community engagement
letters

Is this what you voted for?

The “new dynamic” on North Cowichan council has the municipality marching backwards at double time.

In spite of a great body of evidence that fracked “natural” gas in homes is harmful for children, releases carcinogens into living spaces, is more dangerous for everyone from a fire and explosive perspective and that “electric only” homes are more comfortable and cheaper to operate; the “new” council has reversed the ban on gas heating and hot water in new residential construction.

They did this despite the strong recommendations to the contrary from staff and from health and building professionals and dozens of letters and speakers opposing the move.

In spite of the fact that extensive community engagement and prolonged consultation with stakeholders and advice from staff supported a prolonged pause on logging on the six mountains of North Cowichan, the “new” council has decided to prioritize the resumption of industrial clearcut logging in the community forests.

In spite of the fact that there has been long and extensive engagement of public and stakeholders in creating the Official Community Plans for North Cowichan and against the recommendations and professional opinions of staff, the “new council” continues to approve developments that do not adhere to those thoughtful visions of what our communities should look like tomorrow and far into the future.

If this is not what you voted for, please send a letter expressing your displeasure to [email protected]. And more importantly, make sure that you vote for “something else” in the fall of 2026.
