Addison Urquhart has accepted a transfer deadline offer to University of California Dominican to play for the Penguins.

Cowichan Bay lacrosse standout Addison Urquhart has accepted a transfer deadline offer to University of California Dominican.

Urquhart had previously committed to the American International College Yellow Jackets in Springfield, Massachusetts but found UC Dominican to be a better all-around fit.

It’s a top-25 school academically and the Penguin lacrosse team plays in the Rocky Mountain Conference — a premier NCAA Division 2 conference.

“It was an unexpected transfer deadline move, but I had to do what was going to be better for me academically and athletically," Urquhart said. "UC Dominican is a really good school, and it’s on the west coast so I’m pretty happy about that. So far it’s great. The coaches are next level and the boys on the team have been really welcoming and are ready to get to work.”

Urquhart is one of a number of freshmen on the roster and is the only Canadian. Known in the Cowichan region and internationally for his box lacrosse skills, he will suit up for the Pengins' field lacrosse team as a midfielder.

Urquhart was named the Canadian Lacrosse League’s Team Canada captain during the International Indoor Junior Lacrosse's (IIJL) U18 World Junior Lacrosse Championships, in East Aurora, NY this past August. He led the team in scoring.

Due to a sick family member, head coach Todd Wilfong couldn’t make the U16 world tournament happening the following weekend. Still in the U.S. awaiting his transfer, U16 CLL’s Team Canada assistant coach Neil Pike took advantage of Urquhart being close by and asked him to be on the bench. He accepted the offer to coach and assisted the team to a silver performance in the U16 tournament.

“Addison has an incredible lacrosse IQ," Pike said. "After leading us as captain in the U18 championships, it was a no-brainer to bring him onto the bench in an assistant role. His leadership, vision, and ability to connect with the younger guys make him a natural coach in the making.”
