Vancouver Island trans author to launch debut sci-fi novel

Book launch for The New Worlds will feature a live reading, on-stage interview, sci-fi trivia, a drag performance and more

The New Worlds, a sci-fi debut by trans author Jaye C. Watts, will be launched at theDock in Victoria on Oct. 18.

Presented by the Victoria Downtown Residents’ Association, the free event will feature a live reading, on-stage interview and audience Q&A moderated by author D.C. Greschner and never-before-seen space-themed drag performance by Persi Flage, sci-fi trivia with prizes, snacks, and music by DJ n_dless.

Jaye C. Watts holds a B.A. in sociology. Presently, he engages with the world's largest Transgender Archives in his role with the Chair in Transgender Studies at University of Victoria.

Watts was home schooled in a fundamentalist Christian household. His rocky journey of self-identity has had its ups and downs. He portrays similar sentiments through his protagonist, who lives in a future that is a mix of "potential and peril."

This LGBTQ dystopian sci-fi is about Axton Bryce, who is born to protect “the truth.” It's the year 2293 and the truth no longer exists. In the future there are many truths, giving rise to many worlds, but each must be kept separate. Axton patrols the New Worlds Star System to observe, participate, and gather information.

But as she learns the ways of each world, she must also hunt for those who defy their world’s truth: the Outliers.

Sci-fi fans are invited to join the celebration on Oct. 18 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at theDock, 722 Cormorant Street, Suite 300.
