Next month, it's going to feel like the first time for the École Kelowna Secondary School (KSS) choir.
The choir is getting the chance to be jukebox heroes as they won a contest to perform with famous British-American band Foreigner at its Nov. 7 concert at Prospera Place, for them, a long, long way from home.
The band, which will reach 50 years in existence next year, launched the contest in collaboration with Prospera Place and K96.3 Classic Rock. The choir will be performing Foreigner's hit I Want to Know What Love Is with the band.
“When I saw the ad, it was just like, obviously a no-brainer that I would enter my students into this competition because they need this experience,” said KSS teacher Shiela French. “I know it will change their lives. And I know that they’re going to love it… absolutely everybody should be in a choir.”
The choir was surprised on Tuesday, Oct. 7, with the news that they won the contest. On top of winning the opportunity, Foreigner donated $500 to the choir.
For one KSS student, the opportunity got him hot-blooded, calling it a dream come true.
“I’m really excited,” Thomas Abresch said. “I think my dad’s super pumped, this is definitely his jam, and it’s my jam too. I really love 80s music, and I really love Foreigner. I joined the choir in grade 10, and it immediately just felt super comfortable. I love singing. The program here is so fantastic, and the KSS choir is just a great community, great people.”
The opportunity is something the choir will remember until the end of time.
Foreigner's stop in Kelowna is part of its Juke Box Hero tour with B.C. band 54-40. Tickets are available through selectyourtickets.com.
