Letter: Fed up with Duncan

A casual observer could easily determine the new bike lanes provide safety for no one
letters

I find it interesting that the Citizen newspaper has characterized those who oppose the ridiculous Coronation Street/Queen Street bike lanes as “hostile.” Perhaps a better characterization would be fed up.

Our Mayor Michelle Staples seems to think there is a bottomless pit of taxpayer cash to throw at an endless list of her useless pet projects. Bike lanes, scramble crosswalks postage stamp sized parks and gigantic unwieldy recycling bins. No public input allowed.

A casual observer could easily determine the new bike lanes provide safety for no one, and have accomplished nothing other than squeezing an ever increasing amount of traffic into an ever decreasing area.

In addition to this I don’t need the Citizen staff to tell me to go for a walk or ride a bike or skateboard to meet new friends and see the city. I see the city all the time, a city in decline, hardly any maintenance to roads, sidewalks and other infrastructure, traffic congestion that’s out of control, a scramble crosswalk system that brings the entire town to a halt so three people can cross the road.

As a longtime shop local advocate I, like Sharon Jackson, have given up. I now buy nothing in Duncan and only go downtown if absolutely necessary.
