Gerald Fitzgerald of the Chemainus Rotary Club presents a cheque to Joel Bailey of Cowichan Pipes and Drums, who entertained bottle-drop volunteers and residents dropping off their empties with a bagpipe performance.

The Rotary Club of Chemainus presented a cheque for $914.34 to Cowichan Pipes and Drums, August's community group benefiting from Rotary's recycling collection efforts.

The club holds a bottle drop off in Chemainus every Saturday to raise funds for Rotary club projects. On the third Saturday of each month, Rotary partners with other community organizations to help run the bottle drop and a portion of funds raised then goes to the partnering community group.

Led by pipe major Gordon Pollock and supported by the Cowichan Pipers and Drummers Society, the Cowichan Pipes and Drums is a social band dedicated to promoting Celtic arts. The group offers weekly lessons and rehearsals Thursday nights at the Duncan Seniors Centre. New learners are welcomed from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by full band practice until around 9:30. More information, including performance bookings and event schedules, can be found at cowichanpipesanddrums.com.

The bottle drop is located at the Chemainus Rotary Club’s bunker across from Subway on Chemainus Road and accepts refundable containers on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
