'A'

The Cowichan 49ers climbed to the top of the VISL Masters A standings Saturday night, Oct. 4, after a decisive 2-0 victory over long-time rivals Vic West at Sherman Road turf. Goals from Gjoa Carr and veteran striker Blair Sturrock powered the win, while goalkeeper Darian Achurch recorded his third shutout of the season.

The result extends Cowichan’s impressive early campaign. The 49ers have now tallied 12 goals for and surrendered just one against. Both squads entered the match short on numbers, a reality increasingly common in the league as injuries mount for players competing at this advanced stage of their soccer careers.

Next up, Cowichan closes out the first round of play with a clash against Cook Street next Saturday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. on home turf. Cook Street brings a younger, energetic lineup to Masters A, and the 49ers are eager to test themselves against the fresh legs of the up-and-coming side.

'C'

The Cowichan Steelheads beat Cook Street Zgoda 1-0 in the late game Oct. 4 at the Sherman Road turf. Kevin Smith scored for the home side.

The Steelheads now lead the Masters C Division with a perfect 4-0 record and a goal differential of plus 10.

The Steelheads next play host to the Nanaimo Masters on Oct. 11 at home. Kickoff is 8 p.m.

Div 1

On Oct. 3 Cowichan Axis won their second in a row with a 2-0 victory over Bays United.

Axis plays next on the road against Vic West on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.

Div 3

Cowichan Oak fell 4-1 to Salt Spring FC on Oct. 4.

Next up is a visit to Campbell River to play the Golden Wings on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
