The Wheels of Hope program, which helps cancer patients reach their life-saving treatments across the B.C.. Volunteers drive those who cannot drive themselves to appointments, typically to large cities such as Kelowna, Prince George and Victoria.
Currently, the Wheels of Hope program is looking to expand their coverage across B.C. by looking for more volunteer drivers.
“We’re currently seeking volunteer drivers as we continue to expand our services in B.C.,” says Mark Kahan, volunteer coordinator at the Canadian Cancer Society. “Volunteers primarily help transport cancer patients to local treatment centres or connect them with other drivers for appointments in major cities like Kelowna, Prince George and Victoria.”
What are the volunteer requirements? Monday to Friday availability — ideally a half day per week or a few days per month — ongoing for at least six months. The program is very flexible and will accommodate vacations and other personal commitments. A valid driver’s license with three or fewer demerits and access to a 100% smoke-free vehicle. Willingness to complete a criminal background check and provide references.
“As a volunteer driver, you can give the meaningful gift of a ride—helping people with cancer get to and from their life-saving treatments and medical appointments. Mileage reimbursement or a charitable tax receipt will be provided,” Kahan adds.
