UPDATE: Witnesses sought after fatal motorcycle collision near Qualicum Beach

Police: Motorcycle rider seriously injured, passenger was killed

A motorcycle passenger has died, the rider is in serious condition and police need help from witnesses and dash-camera video to learn exactly what caused a fatal collision near Qualicum Beach.

The crash occurred on Sept. 13 at 7:31 p.m., when a Harley Davidson with custom skull-and-smoke paint collided with a white, early-model Chevrolet S-10 pickup on Island Highway West near Mistaken Road, according to a news release by BC Highway Patrol.

The motorcycle rider, a 44-year-old Cowichan Bay man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. His passenger, a 37-year-old Port Alberni woman, did not survive. The driver of the pickup, a 54-year-old Qualicum Beach man, was unhurt.

“The minutes and hours leading up to this collision could provide important evidence. If you saw the motorcycle rider or pickup driver’s behaviour, please talk to police,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “We also encourage people against speculating about who or what caused this crash. Nothing has been ruled out.”
