The sports and games had already gotten started, but now the torch has been lit, too, welcoming one and all to the 55-Plus B.C. Games in Nanaimo.
The opening ceremony for the games was held Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Serauxmen Stadium, and participants from every zone filled the stands to see and hear drumming, music, dance, speeches, and the torch lighting in the ballpark's infield.
Diana Johnstone, president of the host committee, said Nanaimo is thrilled to welcome the many happy, healthy British Columbians who have gathered for the games.
"The 55-Plus B.C. Games are a symbol of what it means to be active in mind and body and there will be the most tremendous competition this week," she said. "Enjoy every minute, play your best, make new friends and be sure to try one of our famous Nanaimo bars."
Nanaimo-Gabriola MLA Sheila Malcolmson read a welcome statement from B.C. Tourism and Sport Minister Anne Kang, and also offered her own messages of welcome and gratitude. She also spotlighted the fine array of venues that are hosting the sports and games this week.
"We're so proud in Nanaimo – and it's a huge credit to the City of Nanaimo and many partners in this community – that we have such fantastic facilities," Malcolmson said.
Mayor Leonard Krog said Nanaimo is lucky to have everyone coming to the city for the games and he blessed and thanked organizers and participants.
"Get out there in the next few days and show British Columbia where the energy is at – it's here in Nanaimo, gathered from across this amazing province," he said.
The opening ceremony included drumming by Shachihoko Taiko, songs from Joelle Rabu and Buwa, and ballet dancing from Kirkwood Academy of Performing Arts.
Four Zone 2 55-Plus B.C. Games participants had the honour of lighting the torch – pickleball player Kim Brunt, track and field competitor Sandie Bissessur, eight-ball player Sheila King, and archer Michael Clark.
