Police officers are keeping close watch at two high schools in Nanaimo today after threats were made.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, extra officers were deployed to both Nanaimo District Secondary School and Wellington Secondary School as a precaution after threats were made against both high schools on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Both liaison and front-line officers are on site for the rest of the day and will control access to both facilities and patrol school grounds, the press release noted.

Reserve Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, said police hope the presence of members doesn't cause concern for students and staff.

"We recognize the presence of additional officers at these schools may be uncomfortable for some," he said in the press release. "Please be assured that the safety of the students, the staff and the facilities is paramount to us. If anyone has any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to speak to the officers."

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools has been contacted for further comment.
