One person was arrested after a vehicle was driven into a home in the Nile Creek area, south of Bowser on Oct. 13.
While were Oceanside RCMP were on route to the scene, police were updated that the home was "engulfed in flames," according to Const. Tim Kenning.
"Also while on route, the emergency responding personnel received information that the owner was being assaulted," Kenning said. "All parties knew each other."
Multiple officers were on scene, according to police, and one suspect was arrested and taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
While responding to the incident one of the Oceanside detachment police vehicles was involved in a collision at the old Island Highway and Crescent Road East in Qualicum Beach, according to a news release from RCMP.
"Both vehicles involved sustained significant damage and luckily there were no major injuries," the release said.
Police charged Dempsey Alan Meechan with four offences: dangerous operation of a conveyance, arson with disregard for human life, assault with a weapon and mischief, according to the RCMP release.
The Oceanside RCMP believe this was an isolated incident with no outstanding risk to the public.
The home is still standing, according to Fire Chief Mark Taylor with Bow Horn Bay Fire Department, but the interior of both floors has been "gutted”.
“There were exposures on both sides of the building with other homes and no other homes were damaged,” Taylor said.
No one was injured by the fire, he added.
Bow Horn Bay received automatic mutual aid from the Dashwood, Coombs-Hilliers and Qualicum Beach fire departments.
Firefighters used a hydrant, as well tender shuttles and set up a pond to supplement the water supply, since four lines were used to put out the blaze.
