A new program at Queen Margaret's School will blend education with philanthropy once the construction of an automotive restoration classroom on campus is finished.
According to the school, the QMS Classics for Kids Program introduces Grade 11 and 12 students to a unique automotive restoration course in which they will gain practical experience restoring a classic car "from rusty ruin to gleaming symbol".
The course will be led by Mill Bay resident Matt Sager, star of the History Channel’s Lost Car Rescue. Sager graduated from Shawnigan Lake School in 2007.
Every year a new vehicle will enter the shop in poor shape and leave the shop ready to be showcased at community events across the province before being raffled to raise money for the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation's support of pediatric care in the Cowichan Valley.
“This is more than a course; it’s an opportunity for our students to learn real-world skills, contribute to a meaningful cause, and connect with the community in a tangible way,” said QMS head of school, Ander Monro. “We’re proud to join forces with the Cowichan Hospital Foundation in this exciting joint venture.”
The program will officially launch with a special Classics for Kids Car Show on Friday, Sept. 19, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at QMS. The family friendly event gives attendees the opportunity to explore program plans, view local classic cars, and to learn how they can support the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation.
“We are thrilled to partner with Queen Margaret’s School on this unique project," said Naomi Low, CDHF CEO. "The Classics for Kids Program not only provides an incredible opportunity for students to engage in, and understand the impact of, philanthropy, but also helps ensure that local children and families will benefit directly from enhanced pediatric care in the Cowichan Valley.”
