PHOTOS: Tour de Rock raises thousands in Parksville Qualicum Beach

Cycle ride garners money each year for Canadian Cancer Society

The Tour de Rock passed through Parksville and Qualicum Beach on Sept. 25 as they raise thousands in support of childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society.

The team stopped at First Credit Union in Bowser before heading on to Glassford Square, the Village Eatery, Kwalikum Secondary School and Arrowview Elementary School in Qualicum Beach.

From there they cycled to Parksville stops at Thrifty Foods, where $660 was donated and Berwick Parksville, who pitched in $1,838. The team will spend the night at the Bayside Resort.

The cross-Island cycle continues until Oct. 3 and the riders will meet people with stops at schools, local businesses and community events as they raise funds to support children affected by cancer and their families.

"From the very first ride, Tour de Rock has grown on the strength of dedicated volunteers and community partners from Port Alice to Victoria," the Tour de Rock website says. "Tour de Rock remains determined to continue supporting children and families living with and beyond cancer. Your ongoing support is vital as we continue towards making life better today and transforming the future of cancer forever."

Next, the team will travel through Cathedral Grove on their way to Port Alberni on Sept. 26 and Tofino and Ucluelet on Sept. 27.

They'll also visit Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Chemainus, Lake Cowichan, Duncan, Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, Westshore, Sooke, Oak Bay, Sidney, Esquimalt, Saanich and Victoria.

By the time the team reaches Victoria, it will have cycled for two weeks and covered 1,200 kilometres.

Drivers are asked to drive slow and give lots space if they happen to pass the group on the highway.

Every year since 1997, police agencies and emergency service personnel cycle for 14 days raising funds for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society.
