Athletes have begun their hunt for medals at the 55-Plus B.C. Games in Nanaimo.
Opening ceremonies haven't even happened yet – they're set for the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 10 – but action is well underway at nearly 20 venues around the city, with 21 sports and games being contested in Nanaimo and neighbouring communities.
According to a press release from games organizers, the event is welcoming 2,700 participants, and 1,000 volunteers are helping the organizing committee to make it all happen. Organizers estimate the event will bring $3-5 million in economic activity to the region.
"Hosting the Nanaimo 55-Plus B.C. Games is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our community to people right across the province," said Diana Johnstone, president of the host society, in the release. "These games are a symbol of what it means to stay active in mind and body and there will be some tremendous competition this week."
Opening ceremonies are happening at 6 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium.
