North Cowichan council has directed staff to review accessible parking in Chemainus and explore adding more spaces in and around Waterwheel Park.

The motion was recommended by the municipality’s Accessibility Advisory Committee at its Aug. 19 meeting, and adopted at the Sept. 17 council meeting.

Staff will examine potential locations, costs and timelines for implementation.

The move follows public concern raised in July when accessible stalls were blocked by temporary infrastructure during downtown events, prompting calls for improved accessibility.

Municipal staff said the report is expected by the end of the year, with any recommended changes beginning to roll out in 2026.

North Cowichan has previously stated its commitment to “creating an inclusive community” and that additional attention would be given to accessible parking during events.
