A new pedestrian footbridge at Brown Drive Park in Ladysmith has been installed ahead of schedule, marking a major milestone in the first phase of the park’s multi-year redevelopment plan.
Located on the main trail beyond the Storybook Walk and bike skills area, the footbridge allows park users, including families with strollers and people with mobility aids, to safely cross the creek year-round. It replaces an informal crossing and is intended to enhance both accessibility and trail safety.
Contractors followed an approved environmental management plan during the installation to protect sensitive fish habitat along the creek.
“We’re excited to see the new footbridge in place,” said Nicholas Pescod, communications and engagement specialist for the Town of Ladysmith. “As the largest improvement completed in Brown Drive Park to date, following the installation of water fountains, it will make our beloved park safer and more enjoyable for everyone.”
The bridge installation was part of Phase 1 of the Brown Drive Park Kinsmen Playground Implementation Plan, which also includes new benches, a water fountain and a future parking and staging area. The plan identifies long-term priorities across three phases including playground upgrades, trail enhancements, brook naturalization, a picnic shelter and eventually a new washroom building.
The town thanked residents for their patience during the week-long closure for construction which began Sept. 2.
The Brown Drive Park plan was developed through extensive public engagement beginning in 2022. Key goals include improving accessibility, preserving natural features and creating inclusive, intergenerational recreational spaces.
