The Cowichan Neighbourhood House Association plans to install a wheelchair-accessible shower and a commercial washer and dryer at the Neighbourhood House in Chemainus in an initiative called The Dignity Project.

The Dignity Project is in recognition of the need for access to basic hygiene facilities which many in the community lack.

The laundry facility is expected to open by the end of October, with the shower following in November.

“We’ve named this initiative The Dignity Project because it’s about restoring basic human dignity,” said Kathy Asp, president of the CNHA. “A shower and clean clothes can mean the difference between being excluded or being able to participate in community life.”

Asp said the CNHA acknowledges the generous support of local organizations and individuals who have made The Dignity Project possible.

Key partners include the Chemainus Hospital Auxiliary, the Chemainus Rotary Club, and the Masonic Lodge.

The Crofton Mill Recreation Association, under Domtar, also hosted a golf tournament with participation from several businesses that raised several thousand dollars.

“Numerous individuals also contributed with donations ranging from $500 to $1,000,” Asp said. “A special thanks goes to Pat Barrett, who donated the funds for the commercial washer and dryer.”
