An outdoor outfitter chain is aiming to reach the peak as part of Nanaimo’s outdoor recreation retail scene.

Mountain Equipment Company will open its second store on Vancouver Island this winter with a new location in Nanaimo.

According to an MEC press release, the company is “building on strong growth and renewed momentum” since it has returned to Canadian ownership.

The Nanaimo store will open at 2517 Bowen Rd. with more than 24,000 square feet of floor space with “an unmatched selection of outdoor brands and gear” and as a “hub for local outdoor communities.”

Nanaimo, with its growing population and thriving outdoor culture, is a natural fit for the company's newest store, the release said, noting that, for years, Island residents and visitors relied on MEC’s Victoria location.

The company will sell outdoor gear and apparel, and will be outfitted with a full-service bike shop and ski service are and a 'bouldering room' for testing climbing shoes. MEC promises expert advice from staff "who live and breathe the outdoors," and plans to host community events, clinics, and workshops.

The company is bucking Canada’s outdoor retail landscape, which MEC’s press release noted, continues to shrink following the closures of more than 22 stores between Atmosphere, La Cordée and Breathe Outdoors, while MEC expands its retail footprint and posts year-over-year growth. MEC cited a strong summer retail season with Canadians opting to vacation and shop locally, providing growth in in-store traffic and online sales momentum the company plans to build on through this fall and winter.

“Over the past year, we’ve invested in what sets us apart; expert staff, a best-in-class assortment of outdoor brands, and deep community roots,” said Peter Hlynsky, CEO, in the press release. “Our new Nanaimo store reflects that strategy, opening in places with hyper-engaged outdoor communities we can support. Like all MEC locations, it will serve as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts while proactively connecting with and supporting the local outdoor community.”

The company is currently hiring for store positions, including bike mechanics, merchandisers, sales associates and others. The grand opening is planned for the weekend of Dec. 13-14.
