Traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Nanaimo Airport is flowing again after a crash at a nearby bridge this afternoon.

According to a social media post at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, Drive B.C. stated that the motor vehicle incident happened at the Haslam Creek Bridge, close to Spruston Road and Haslam Road, in the northbound lane.

Ron Gueulette, chief of Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department, told the News Bulletin the bridge in the slow lane suffered “significant damage” in the incident, and said it appeared that a super-duty pickup truck lost a wheel.

There were no significant injuries and the driver did not want medical attention.

Gueulette said that the bridge was being evaluated to determine whether the lane could be re-opened and Drive B.C. said the scene was clear just after 1:15 p.m.
