A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault at Eagle View Elementary School in View Royal.
West Shore RCMP say the incident happened Sept. 15 between 5 and 6:30 p.m., when a girl was playing in the schoolyard.
According to police, a girl – whose age was not disclosed – was playing in the playground area when she was approached by an unknown male suspect, who exposed himself and touched the child in a sexual manner.
"The child was able to leave the area safely and was physically unharmed," police said in a statement.
The suspect was arrested Sept. 17 and remains in custody. He is expected to appear in court today.
Police say no similar reports have been received. Officers canvassed the area for witnesses and video surveillance.
The suspect was initially described as a white adult male between 20-30-years-old, with longer than shoulder-length hair, prescription glasses, and wearing a black hoodie with white writing, and green cargo-style pants.
Police are also reminding parents and caregivers to speak with children about personal safety, including:
- Staying in well-populated areas when playing outside, and/or playing with a group of friends;
- Reporting anything that makes them uncomfortable to a trusted adult immediately;
- To call 911 right away if they feel their health or safety is at risk.
