For more than 35 years, Competition Tree Service has been proving they can get to the root of any problem — even something as unexpected as rescuing a kitten in distress.
During the first week of August, a feline that had ventured a little too far up a tree along Renfrew Road near the Kinsol Trestle was spotted by a contractor, who realized the cat was stuck.
That’s when Competition Tree Service stepped in.
Staff member Elijah Ashton came to the rescue, retrieving the stranded cat and safely returning it to its grateful owner. According to staff, the woman was overjoyed to see her furry friend back on the ground and even offered a gift to show her appreciation.
"Always happy to help," said Ashton.
Why call the fire department?
Founded in the late 1980s by owner Bud Beam, Competition Tree Service Ltd., based in Shawnigan Lake, has seen its fair share of feline rescues. Beam said they get more calls about cats stuck in trees than one might think.
Now celebrating 35 years of service in the Cowichan Valley, the company offers a full range of tree and hedge care services — a whole “cat” and caboodle, so to speak. Their offerings include dangerous tree removal, pruning, hedge trimming, tree maintenance and winterizing, residential and commercial tree care, view enhancement, and clear-cutting for building sites. They also remove debris using excavators and a bin truck.
Beam, who is proud to employ a local crew and serve the community they all call home, said their efficient team allows them to offer fair and competitive pricing.
"There is no job too big or too small," said Beam. "We hope everyone feels taken care of and happy with the work we provide. We have built such an amazing clientele, as well as solid relationships in the community over the last 35 years. We are just so happy to give back in more ways than just tree work."
