Multiple cows dead after suspected poisoning in rural Cariboo, investigation ongoing

'We are aware of the situation and are actively investigating'

A fertilizer project in the Quesnel region has been shut down, said the Lhtako Dene Nation as an investigation unfolds following the death of more than 10 cows.

According to multiple media outlets, the cattle were found deceased near 300 Forest Service Road, which is a logging road between Quesnel and Barkerville. The BC Cattlemen's Association (BCCA) confirmed to Black Press Media that 11 cows were found dead.

It is suspected the cows died from nitrate poisoning caused by consuming fertilizer that was spilled while filling helicopters. According to the BCCA, the fertilizer wasn't protected from cattle or wildlife, resulting in the deaths.

B.C.'s Ministry of Forests is also investigating.

"We are aware of the situation and are actively investigating in collaboration with impacted parties to understand what occurred and prevent further impacts," said the Ministry of Forests in an emailed statement to Black Press Media.

At 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Lhtako Dene Nation's Lands & Natural Resources team was notified about an incident and an investigation immediately started.

"All information and details about the incident have been turned over to the proper authorities," said the Lhtako Dene Nation in a Facebook post.

Sheldon Clare, the MLA for Prince George-North Cariboo is also aware of the situation.

"We have been continually working with the minister and stakeholders including with the rancher whose cattle were killed," said Clare in a statement. "This event highlights a number of issues including the need for clear communication and coordination to ensure tenure holders and users of the land are aware of their respective activities."

It's unknown at this time if any other cows or wildlife have been affected by the suspected poisoning.

Black Press Media has reached out to the Quesnel RCMP, and the RCMP's Livestock Section for more information.
