About 200 people showed up to protest outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Portland on Sunday, Sept. 28.

Hundreds gathered Sunday (Sept. 28) in Portland to protest President Donald Trump’s announcement that federal troops could be deployed to the city.

Protesters assembled at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility on Southwest Macadam Avenue. By 5 p.m., demonstrators were blocking streets in front of the building, according to KOIN 6 News.

Both Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Gov. Tina Kotek have stressed protestors not to “take the bait,” and to remain peaceful as they oppose the president’s use of military.

Sunday’s demonstration highlights ongoing concerns among Oregonians about federal involvement in local law enforcement and the impact of armed troops in city neighbourhoods

“This is an abuse of power and a misuse of the military,” Sandy Chung, Executive Director, ACLU of Oregon told KOIN 6 News. “Oregon is home, not a military target. Violence has no place in our politics or our communities. The military should not come to Oregon.”
