Twenty teams from across the province gathered Sept. 12-13 for the 26th annual Friendship Cup, marking the start of the high school field hockey season.
Brentwood College and Shawnigan Lake School co-hosted the tournament, which featured 20 teams from 14 schools across three divisions. Games were played at Shawnigan Lake and the Cowichan Sportsplex.
In the premier division at Shawnigan Lake School, Collingwood edged Handsworth on points differential to claim top spot. Crofton House finished third, while Shawnigan Lake School’s senior team placed fifth and Quw’utsun Secondary was sixth.
The competitive division was played at the Cowichan Sportsplex, where Glenlyon Norfolk and Handsworth tied for first. St. Michael’s University School placed third, while Brentwood’s second XI was fourth. Queen Margaret’s School and Quamichan School tied for seventh.
In the development division, also hosted at Shawnigan, Frances Kelsey School took top honours. Alberni District Secondary placed second and Collingwood’s juniors were third. Brentwood’s second XI finished fourth, while Shawnigan Lake School’s Grade 8s and juniors came seventh and eighth.
In provincial rankings released Sept. 16, Brentwood debuted at No. 3 in the ‘AA’ division. Shawnigan Lake was ranked No. 5, Queen Margaret’s No. 9 and Quamichan No. 10.
Up next is the annual John Ferreria Memorial tournament Sept. 26 and 27 also at Shawnigan Lake School and the Cowichan Sportsplex. Included in the field are the top teams teams from Brentwood, Shawnigan, Kelsey, Quamichan, Queen Margaret's and Quw'utsun.
