The Yukon Coroner’s Service is investigating two deaths after a fire broke out at the Brewer Creek mine camp early Oct. 3, the agency said in an Oct. 6 news release.

The remote camp, located approximately 100 kilometres south of Dawson City, is only accessible by air or boat, according to the coroner’s office.

Two seasonal workers from British Columbia, both 20 years old, died in the fire. Five others were medevacked to Dawson City Community Hospital for treatment.

The site was scheduled to shut down on Oct. 4, one day after the fire occurred, the coroner’s office said.

The investigation is being conducted with support from the Whitehorse Fire Marshal’s Office, Yukon Workers’ Safety and Compensation Board and the Dawson City RCMP detachment, according to the coroner's office.

Suspicious causes have been ruled out, but the origin of the fire remains undetermined as the investigation continues, the coroner’s office said.

The coroner's office offered condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of those who died.
