Duncan's Eagles Hall at risk of closing due to finances

Fraternal organization to hold major fundraiser on Nov. 15

Cowichan’s branch of the Fraternal Order of Eagles is in a financial crisis and is looking for help from the community.

President Wilf Nash said the fraternal non-profit organization’s hall on Boys Road, which was built in the 1950s, had to have some major work completed last year, including a new roof costing more than $100,000 and essential plumbing repairs of more than $20,000.

“These expenditures wiped out our contingency funds and, while our bills are being paid, we currently have no financial cushion and we’re expecting some other major expenditures in the coming months, including insurance on the building,” he said.

For decades, the Eagles Hall has been a cornerstone of the Duncan community.

Generations of people in the Cowichan Valley and beyond have celebrated there at many events over the decades, including weddings, dances, live music, and countless gatherings that have brought people together.

It’s a place full of memories, laughter, and connection.

But Nash said the unexpected expenses have left the local Eagles organization, which currently has approximately 250 members, struggling to stay afloat, and without help, the Eagles may not make it to the end of the year.

To raise funds, the Eagles will hold a fundraiser at the hall, located at 2965 Boys Rd., on Nov. 15 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Nash suggested that people can donate silent auction items or prizes to the fundraiser, and they can also volunteer their time and expertise for the event, as well as spreading the word and bringing their friends.

“Let’s rally as a community and make sure The Eagles’ hall continues to be a place where memories are made for years to come,” Nash said.

“If you’d like to help or have ideas, please reach out because every bit counts.”

People are encouraged to get their $25 tickets to the fundraiser, which will include live music, quickly before they sell out, and you do not have to be a member to attend.
