Duncan Showroom unveils September lineup

From storytelling and open mic nights to indie bands and touring folk duos, the Duncan Showroom keeps the music alive this September

After the fabulous festivities of the 40th day of July on Aug. 31, things begin to 'fall' back in place at the Duncan Showroom as Longevity John has a lineup of great entertainment in store for the month of September.

On Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m., the boys are back with a brand new season of the Eugene and Billie Show as Eugene Smith, and co host Bill Levity continue to provide great music and stage banter along with interviews and even more magical music from their invited guests. Always ba fun time had by all, donations will be accepted to be part of the live studio audience. The dynamic duo will be back to do their thing on stage on Sept 16, and 30.

Life is not a dress rehearsal, so bring your talents to the stage on Sept. 2. The Showroom’s ‘Dress Rehearsal Tuesday’, also known as their weekly open-mic night, gets underway at 7:30 p.m. It’s a great chance for newcomers to get their feet wet, or for past performers to bring new material to the stage. Whether you sing, play an instrument, or both it’s your time to shine. There will be another open-mic night scheduled for the same time later this month on Sept. 9, 16, and 23.

On Sept. 4 at  7 p.m., sink into the ancient art of storytelling with the Island Storytellers. These tale tellers are from the Victoria Storytellers’ Guild, The Around Town Tellers, from Nanaimo, and the Mid-Island Storytellers, based out of Qualicum Beach and Parksville. There will be two 45-minute sets with a short break in between; a donation of $15 to $20 is suggested.

On Sept. 5, Longevity John proves that one doesn't need liquid courage to sing their heart out with the Showroom's popular 'Sober Karaoke'. Show your talents off on stage. Singers can sign up once the doors open at 6:30 p.m., performances will be broadcast live to both YouTube and Facebook. The cover charge is $5 for all those who attend.

On Sept. 6, keep it real with local alternative indie rock trio Van Riel. In case you missed their set at this summer's 39 Days of July this is your chance to see them shine as they win over new fans with their original music. A donation of $20 is suggested.

On Sept. 7, put the shine in your Sun-day with the sweet sounds of local musical prodigy Malakai who always delivers lyrics and soul beyond his years. The local talent takes the stage at 3 p.m..

On Sept. 10, feel the blues with two-time Maple Blues Award songwriting recipient Ann Vriend who also won the R&B Single Of the Year” Award at the Edmonton Music Awards. She will be taking the Showroom stage at 7:30 p.m., tickets are $25.

On Sept. 11, Longevity John has arranged for music lovers to catch the sounds of South America singer/ songwriter Ian Skorscha before he heads back to Argentina. A donation of $20 is suggested.

On Sept. 13, shed some old skin and discover new blues group Rattleshake. Based out of Victoria, this band which consists of two electric guitars, an organ player on his Nord, as well as bass and drums great players will surely provide a colourful musical experience as they grace the Showroom stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.

On Sept.17, Connie Kaldor fans have spoken. She will take the stage for the sold out show at 7:30 p.m.

Feel the music with Victoria based singer/songwriter and 'Honky Tonk' heart-breaker Elise LeBlanc who will be bringing the musical styles of alt-country, folk  and americana to the Showroom stage on Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

On Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m., Reuben Shepher returns to the showroom stage, and act that Longevity John says from the first time he opened his mouth, he immediately took notice. Come and be a part of the live audience as this gifted local singer songwriter records some new music. A donation of $20 is suggested.

On Sept. 26, awaken your soul to the sounds of timeless contemporary folk music with The Awakeneers. A nomadic tribe of multi-instrumentalist songwriters most of whom are siblings will grace the Showroom stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.

On Sept. 27,  folk fans will be flying high as folk/Americana duo Two Crows for Comfort take the Showroom stage at 7:30 p.m. From Winnipeg, the duo has spent their last few years touring in an 18-foot camper alongside their dog Elliot, as they share their songs and stories with folks from across both Canada and the US.The talented twosome had an awesome time playing at this year's Winnipeg Folk Festival, as well as several other festivals in the UK this summer. Other highlights for the couple include having shows at the legendary Bitter End in New York, and as well as Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. This is one act not to miss out on a donation of $20, preferably $25 if you can.

On Sept. 30 , following the Eugene and Billie Show it is time to go with the FLOW with Bill Levity as he hosts 'For the Love of Words.'

Celebrating its 17th year, FLOW is a monthly invitation for all writers and poets to bring their inner thoughts and favourite words to the stage in front of a live audience. Each performer will be given five minutes to read their works. Admission is $5 for all performers, and $7 for audience members.
