Cowichan author brings sauerkraut to Duncan bookshop

Holly Howe shares recipes from her new cookbook while signing it at Volume One Books on Sept. 13

Get cooking with a new read as Holly Howe promotes the updated version of her new cookbook titled Mouthwatering Sauerkraut Fermentation Made Easy!: Master an Ancient Art of Preservation, Grow Your Own Probiotics, Supercharge Your Gut Health at Duncan's Volume One Bookstore on Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — a must have for readers who love food, health, and local stories.

"I was inspired to write Mouthwatering Sauerkraut Fermentation Made Easy! to take the fear out of fermentation and show just how simple — and safe — it can be," said Howe. "With clear, foolproof methods, I aimed to empower anyone to transform a humble head of cabbage into a delicious, probiotic-rich food that supports gut health on autopilot."

Howe, who is originally from California, moved to Cowichan Valley with her family in 2007, and for more than 20 years has been teaching people how to turn humble cabbage into delicious, probiotic-rich sauerkraut and kimchi — foods that can improve digestion, boost immunity, and connect to centuries-old traditions.

"My mission is to see sauerkraut fermenting in 100,000 homes, one jar at a time," said Howe. "I love making this ancient art fun and approachable for everyone."

Howe self-published the first edition of her book on Amazon in 2018. Last spring, she was approached by Robert Rose Publishing out of Toronto to republish it, adding a kimchi section to it, and in the updated version will use [+Kimchi] at times. Visit her website at www.makesauerkraut.com.

At the event, in addition to getting your book signed, guests can sample two kinds of sauerkraut, and a traditional kimchi, with a vegan option, chat more with the author about fermentation, all while learning how easy it is to create these health-boosting foods at home. "After tasting my unique flavours of sauerkraut and getting their questions answered, I hope people walk away inspired to make their own probiotic-rich ferment at home," said Howe.
