Cowichan Valley Youth Services' annual general meeting on Sept. 16 at Duncan United Church will feature a presentation by youth mental health expert Dr. Brendan K. Hartman.
"What do preteens and teens most want adults to understand? Why does listening to their voices matter now more than ever? These questions will take centre stage," said a press release for the event.
Hartman is a sociologist, educator, and consultant, and will deliver the talk: “What Preteens & Teens Wish You Knew – And Why We Need Their Wisdom More Than Ever.”
"This keynote invites the community to reflect on how to better support young people’s social and emotional well-being in today’s changing world," said the release.
“Mental health outcomes for this generation of youth are some of the most concerning ever,” said Hartman. “Gen Z is one of the most politically and romantically divided generations ever by gender. Teenagers want more guidance, even if they don’t ask.”
Attendees will walk away knowing more about teens' emotional development, the wisdom they have to offer, and how to support their resilience, said the release.
“This gathering is an opportunity to hear directly from a leading voice on youth well-being, while also learning more about the impact of CVYS in our community,” said Zoe Lauckner, executive director of CVYS. “It’s a chance to come together, reflect, and shape how we stand with youth in the Cowichan Valley.”
Following the keynote at 6 p.m., the AGM will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation — free if cost is a barrier. Registration is encouraged at www.cvyouth.ca/agm
For more than 53 years, CVYS has provided free, accessible mental health support to youth and their caregivers throughout the Cowichan region. The AGM is an open invitation for community members to learn more about this work, connect with others who care about youth, and discover ways to get involved.

The Cowichan Valley Rotary Clubs have chosen their first raffle winner, and there's more where that came from.
Earlier this year, the Rotary Clubs of the Cowichan Valley came together to support the purchase of medical equipment for the new Cowichan District Hospital. The Rotary Clubs launched the Cowichan District Hospital 50/50 Raffle, and on Aug. 21, the first monthly winner was chosen.
Ron Rice was the lucky recipient. He was born in the Cowichan District Hospital and raised in the Cowichan Valley. Rice now lives in Victoria where he manages a non-profit. The winner’s share of the raffle proceeds was $2,645.
The 50/50 Hospital Raffle is live once again, with the next draw on Sept. 21. Tickets are sold online at www.rafflebox.ca/raffle/rotaryclubofduncan.
"The Cowichan Valley Rotary Clubs — Ladysmith, Chemainus, Duncan Daybreak, South Cowichan, Shawnigan Eco and Duncan — thank the raffle’s many supporters and wish everyone success in the next draw," said a press release from the group.
