There’s a noticeable shift in the air as we approach Labour Day Weekend.
Even though we likely have many hot days to go, there’s still that coolness that arrives in the mornings following the long weekend. And with this comes even shorter days, a shift from busy summer life to busy school-year life, and the eventual move into hibernation mode. Though many love the coming of autumn colours, and pumpkin spice latte season, many others find this change difficult, so I share with you a few tips to make the shift in seasons easier on you!
First, let’s just point out that summer isn’t over until Sept. 21, and there’s still time to squeeze in some adventure before the school year starts. Think back to your summer bucket list, and choose one or two more things that you can do before life changes directions. Getting in a couple more summer memories will make going back to school easier!
Next, let’s face it, everyone’s wallet is feeling pretty tight right now. When it comes to back-to-school shopping, think of ways you can reuse old supplies, or make some do-it-yourself decorations for dorm rooms and lockers. Propagate some plants into old mason jars, create your own picture frames, and toss your old school supplies into a dollar store pencil case. Reducing the stress during this part of preparing for September will also help make the transition better.
When a change occurs, such as shifting from summer to fall, it’s a great time to start new habits. A new season brings new routines, which is a great time to be mindful about them. Perhaps your bedtime shifts in the winter, or at least what you’re doing in the evening changes. Choose something that’s really calming to you to include in your nightly routine, or perhaps as a weekly treat. This could be something like reading nightly, or a weekly bubble bath. If you build these moments into your life, instead of seeking these when you’re exhausted and burnt out, it can help with longevity this season.
As fall arrives, our diets tend to change as well. With the coming of fall, it can be helpful to have some ready-made freezer meals. You can spend a day with the family cooking and preparing a few items for the freezer, sharing your specialties with each other. Or dedicate one day a week to cook as a family. This adds to the experience of eating together, and creates stronger bonds and relationships! Lastly, choose a couple of easy-to-make meals, such as sandwiches, to have on hand for any busy, hungry day. The versatility will keep the whole family happy!
Hopefully these wellness tips help to bring more contentment and joy, and less stress and anxiety this back-to-school season.
