Firefighters called to blaze south of Duncan

Black smoke and flames were visible from the home

Flames shot high from a mobile home that caught fire on Monday afternoon, Oct. 6 just south of Duncan.

Unit 23 at Allenby Road Mobile Home Park was consumed by fire and at least three neighbouring units were at risk as firefighters from the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the scene just after noon.

Black smoke and flames were visible at a distance as firefighters worked to contain the fire.

Police, Hydro, and North Cowichan's South End fire crews were also called in as residents of other units within the small community looked on.

"The flames were almost reaching the power lines," said next door neighbour Cathy Gibson, in between fielding calls from those worried for her safety after seeing the smoke. "I heard somebody yelling at them 'You better get out! You better get out!"

Gibson has lived at the park for more than 20 years and said she's never seen anything like it.

She wasn't as worried for her own unit as much she was for the one on the other side of the blaze.

"She was always worried this would happen," Gibson said of the neighbour on the other side of the unit ablaze.

The man and woman who lived in unit 23 did get out safely and were being attended to by first responders.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

Police and fire officials are investigating.
