A Sept. 27 crash took the life of one driver and seriously injured another.

A crash on Highway 4 between Port Alberni and Parksville on Saturday, Sept. 27 has resulted in the death of one driver and serious injuries to another.

Oceanside RCMP said they received a call at 1:30 p.m., reporting a serious two-vehicle crash near Cameron Lake. According to police, an eastbound Honda Civic appeared to have lost control on a series of curves and collided with a westbound Chevy Impala.

The Civic was engulfed in flames and the driver died at the scene.

A 70-year-old man from Alberta was driving the Impala and was seriously injured. He was taken out of the car and transported to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. The RCMP was not able to confirm the man's current condition.

Nobody else was injured in the crash.

BC EHS confirmed one ambulance with advanced care paramedics and a paramedic supervisor responded to the scene and provided emergency medical treatment to a patient.

The RCMP has not publicly identified the driver of the Civic, but have notified the family of the vehicle's registered owner.

Mounties say the investigation is in early stages and all factors have not been determined, but police believe speed and road conditions played a role in the crash. It was raining on Sept. 27.

“Every fatal crash is a preventable tragedy,” said Staff Sergeant Travis De Coene of the Oceanside RCMP. “With winter weather approaching, motorists are urged to slow down and drive to the conditions.”

The crash caused the highway to be closed for approximately five hours with no alternate route between the two communities.

Anyone with any information or dash camera video of the crash is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111.
